The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is a national police unit operating throughout the Finnish territory. The tasks of the NBI can be divided into two main categories:

  • crime prevention and
  • provision of expert services. 

In crime prevention, the main responsibility of the NBI is to fight the most serious, professional and organised crime. The focus of criminal investigation is in organized crime crossing both national borders and the borders of the State Local Districts.

The most important specialist services produced by the NBI are related to:

  • forensic laboratory analyses;
  • international legal assistance;
  • demanding technical intelligence; and
  • criminal intelligence and operational analyses.
