Personnel

The total number of personnel employed by the Finnish police force in 2007 was 10,871. The number of police officers, not including police cadets, was 7,591 in 2007. Women accounted for 25.8% of all police personnel in 2007. Among ordinary officers, women accounted for 15% of the total, among sergeants 6 %, among commanding officers 6% and among police chiefs 2 % of the total.

The number of police officers in relation to the population of the country has continued to decline slightly. In 2007, there was one police officer per 690 inhabitants, compared with 683 in 2006, 678 in 2005 and 675 in 2004. By international standards, the number of police officers in relation to the population of the country is low.
